Volume 146 of the "Warpaint" series. The US Navy's experience in the Korean War showed that a new long-range fighter aircraft with high subsonic performance at very low altitudes was needed that could penetrate enemy defences and detect and destroy small targets in all weather conditions. The Grumman A-6 Intruder was developed with these requirements in mind and was a true bomb carrier. From the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq, the Intruder has proven its worth, carrying a variety of weapons and delivering a powerful punch. From the Intruder airframe, the KA-6D tanker variant was derived, along with the specialised EA-6A Intruder and the EA-6B Prowler, a sophisticated four-seat electronic warfare variant packed with jamming equipment and electronics. Like the A-6, the Prowler was used by both the Navy and the Marine Corps. After nearly 37 years and 693 aircraft built, the Navy's last operational A-6E Intruders were retired by VA-34, the Blue Blasters, on 28 February 1997. The Navy retired its Prowlers in 2015, but the Marine Corps continued to fly the EA-6B until early 2019. The booklet is packed with the usual history and reference material.
