From 1808 to 1813 Madrid was occupied by the French, where Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte became king. The occupiers were torn down monasteries and entire neighborhoods in order to create new space. By bloodily suppressed uprising of 2 May 1808 further surveys throughout the country were caused, in Madrid is the 2nd May hence today nonworking city holiday.
