Volume 122 of the Naval Fighters series. The Loening Amphibians were a unique design with a shoehorn fuselage and retractable landing gear. They could take off and land virtually anywhere. After the first order by the Army in 1924, they were quickly ordered by the Navy and eventually by the Coast Guard. It was even the first aircraft purchased by the USCG. Its many variants were purchased in small numbers but had a major impact on service. It became the most important aircraft for aerial surveys and reconnaissance flights until the 1930s. It was flown by LCDR Byrd (later ADM) on the Arctic expedition, during the surveys of Cuba and Venezuela in 1926, on the first Alaska survey in 1926 by LT Ben Wyatt, the US Army's Pan American Friendship Flight from 1926 to 1927, the second Alaska exploration in 1929 under LCDR Arthor Radford (later Chief of Naval Operations), the Alaska exploration of the Aleutian Islands in 1932 and the Alaska exploration of the Aleutian Islands in 1933.
