Among them are the 1A1 and the Crampton as the oldest, the Prussian S 3 as the numerically strongest, the Reichsbahn-05 as the fastest, the Bavarian S 3/6 as perhaps the most successful and the oil-fired three-cylinder-01 of the Bundesbahn as the most powerful. Andreas Knipping defines the express locomotive on the basis of the compelling criterion of the large driving wheels and works out its evolution from about 1850 to the last refinements around 1960 with many aberrations and beautiful successes.
