In February 1945, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) was appointed an honorary non-commissioned officer in the Auxiliary Territorial Service with the service number 230873. She trained as a driver and mechanic and five months later was given the rank of Honorary Commander (then the female equivalent of Captain).
