Even before his accession to the throne, the unconventional Wittelsbach had made a name for himself politically as a convinced federalist and promoter of business and science. In addition, he ran a model agricultural estate for decades, which earned him the affectionately mocking nickname "Millibauer". However, the reign of this popular king was overshadowed by World War I.
