The four volumes of "The Complete Medal of Honor" contain the full justifications for the 3,546 awards presented to 3,526 men (including 19 in two cases) and one woman between the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861 and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021. This second volume covers the seven and a half decades between the end of the Civil War and the U.S. entry into World War II. During this period, the Medal of Honor was awarded to U.S. combatants and non-combatants for extraordinary gallantry in a number of smaller warssome, like the Korean War of 1871, lasting only a few weeks, others, like the Indian Wars of 18611898, spanning decadesas well as in far larger conflicts, such as World War I.
