Adrian, K. Kapitänleutnant Max-Martin Teichert

T. With U 456 in the North Sea and Atlantic - cruiser "Edinburgh" torpedoed. This is the story of Kapitänleutnant Max-Martin Teichert. Born on 31 January 1915 as the son of a headmaster in Kiel, he joined Officers' Crew 34 of the Reichsmarine in April 1934. After passing training and various courses, he was promoted to lieutenant at sea. At the beginning of the war, he served as a first lieutenant at sea as a second watch and torpedo officer on the destroyer "Z-14 Friedrich Ihn" in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. In 1940 Teichert volunteered for submarine service and after his submarine training he served as I. Officer of the Watch on two enemy voyages on U 94, which was under the command of Captain Lieutenant Herbert Kuppisch. After successfully completing the commanders' course in Memel, he was able to commission U 456 at the Deutsche Werke in Kiel on 18 September 1941, of which he became commander. Promoted to captain lieutenant on 1 December 1941, he led U 456 in several convoy battles in the North Sea and Atlantic. In the process, he succeeded in torpedoing the British cruiser "Edinburgh" on 30 April 1942, whereupon he and his boat were named in the Wehrmacht report.
After a total of 10 undertakings and further successes with U 456, his life ended on 12 May 1943 in the North Atlantic. Max-Martin Teichert and his men of U 456 shared the fate of some 30,000 German U-boat soldiers who laid down their lives at sea. His achievements in the submarine warfare were honoured with the posthumous award of the Knight's Cross on 19 December 1943. With approx. 140 illustrations. Approx. 288 pages.
