Darius, warned by his surprising defeat at Issus, mobilised all available forces in the following two years. According to the sources, almost every man capable of bearing arms was recruited from all corners of the kingdom. His army, which was ethnically very mixed, consisted of foot soldiers and horsemen from Mesopotamia, Babylonia and the Persian Gulf. Its core was the Kara (the army), which was permanently under arms. The largest part consisted of the troops of the eastern parts of the empire. The foot troops were mainly servants equipped with a piece of land, who had little experience in battle, but whose numbers could make a decisive difference.
Darius III (Darius III); * around 380 BC.); * c. 380 BC; Ä July 330 BC at Hekatompylos (near present-day Damghan, Iran), surnamed Kodomannos) was the last Persian king of the Achämenid Empire as successor to Arses from 336 to 330 BC. He was no match for his opponent Alexander the Great, who conquered the Persian Empire from 334 BC. - Wikipedia -
