The Macedonian Phalanx was a heavy infantry formation of high militärial importance für the states of the ancient Hellenistic era. It was pioneered by the Macedonian king Philip II (Ä 336 BC), whose son Alexander the Great (Ä 323 BC) made it the pillar of his conquest of Asia. Subsequently, the Macedonian phalanx dominated the battlefields of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Hellenistic successor states of the Antigonids, Seleucids, Ptolemies, Attalids and other rulers until it was subjugated to the Roman legion from the 2nd century BC and had to give way. -Wikipedia-
