This is the first volume of a five-volume study on the history of the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453). Although this protracted conflict is primarily associated with the kingdoms of France and England, it was in fact a pan-European conflict. The author takes this far-reaching dimension into account with his detailed account.
The first volume describes the roots of the conflict between the English and French crowns, describes the immediate causes that eventually led to the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War and describes events up to the Battle of Crécy (1346) and the capture of Calais(1347) by the English.
