Heinrich Oskar Kunitzsch from Leipzig left behind numerous records of his life, including a diary from his time as a soldier in the First World War, a photo album, field letters and postcards, and a collection of quotations. All of these documents provide deep insight into the character and thoughts of a young man who, after completing his apprenticeship as a bookseller, was drafted into military service and experienced the horrors of war for 18 months before falling ill with a life-threatening disease. The special value of these sources lies in their authenticity, which is not without its problems. This book attempts to reconstruct Oskar Kunitzsch's inner and outer world by linking the various sources and allowing them to speak in a variety of ways. In doing so, the reader himself plays an important role in the reconstruction process, which in turn can reveal nuances of interpretation and extend the subjective example to the general historical context.
