This third volume in the series "Ancient Fashion" looks for the first time at the development of ancient fashion in the Greco-Roman world using coloured sculpture and, taking into account central literary and archaeological evidence, analyses garment forms and the way they were worn. Ancient fashion was always a sign of social and religious affiliation.
Because of the clothing worn, it was obvious to everyone to which social rank or profession one belonged. The focus of this volume is not on weaving techniques or the latest archaeological finds of fabric remains, but on the multifaceted richness of ancient clothing. What did the fashion of that era look like? What kind of clothes were there and how were they named? Through subsequent colouring of sculptures and reliefs, the archaeological evidence is brought back to life and statues and reliefs as well as ancient source texts are made to speak. Fashionable changes become comprehensible again on the basis of the most varied forms of garments and the way they were worn. Thus, the examination of sculptures, mosaics, written sources and wall paintings yields new surprising results that have never been shown coherently before. With these new research results, the third volume fills a striking research gap and is a source of information for anyone interested in ancient history and fashion.
