In 52 BC, the Gallic revolt breaks out under the leadership of Vercingetorix of the Arverni tribe. The first months of the war are marked by a series of minor skirmishes, with Vercingetorix anticipating a kind of guerrilla warfare. Julius Caesar decides to achieve final victory by attacking the capital of the Arverni. The rather disjointed fighting ends in an undeniable victory for the Gauls, forcing Caesar to break camp. Vercingetorix gave chase, but his cavalry was destroyed by the Germanic tribes, and he fled to Alesia, where he waited for a relief army. This was defeated by Caesar outside Alesia, and Vercingetorix was forced to surrender. Gaul became Roman.
