On 6 June 1944, the 116th Regiment of the American 29th Infantry Division landed on "Omaha Beach" under dramatic conditions. General Shuey, who commanded this regiment and later the 29th Brigade, recalls here the long history of this venerable unit: the Maryland and Virginia regiments during the American Civil War, deployment in WW1, reactivation after the US entered WW2, the Normandy landings, the battles for Saint-Lô and Brest, the advance through France and the battle for Aachen and fighting in the Ruhr.
After the war, the 29th Infantry Division was reactivated as a brigade in 1984. It was deployed in Bosnia to keep the peace. The author, who knows this unit well, presents its event- and battle-filled history, accompanied by 400 photos and maps.
