The capture of Pointe du Hoc on 6 June 1944 was one of the most spectacular events of D-Day. 225 American soldiers specially trained for the mission were, in the words of General Bradley, tasked with "one of the most difficult engagements" of the entire Normandy landings: scaling a 30-metre cliff under enemy fire and taking out a heavily fortified German artillery position whose guns would otherwise bring death and destruction to the landing beaches of "Omaha" and "Utah". This is the complete account of one of the most dramatic operations of the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
