In contrast to the landings of the American paratroopers at Sainte-Mère-Eglise, the bloodbath at Omaha Beach or the capture of the Pointe du Hoc, the events of 6 June 1944 at the "Gold" landing are far less well known, and this despite the fact that the whole enterprise was particularly successful here. The 25,000 British soldiers landed here were able to achieve most of the objectives assigned to them. Furthermore, a huge artificial harbour was reached in this area, at Arromanche, and together with the oil port of Port-en-Bessin, the entire Allied fleet was supplied from here.
This is all reason enough to give this section of the D-Day landings more attention, and to bring the events of 6 June 1944 and afterwards closer to the reader in detail. Numerous photographs, in conjunction with the captions and text, give an accurate picture of the British landing on 6 June and the fighting that followed.
