The history of the air wars over Germany, seen from the small Plexiglas bubble of the rear turret of a Lancaster. Ron Smith, originally a member of RAF Squadron 626, then Squadron 156 Pathfinder, flew 65 missions, which he wrote down with the intensity that his isolation in the rear of this metal monster gave him. The book describes in fascinating detail the night-time experience of being enclosed in a Plexiglas capsule above the abyss, mostly in terrible weather, attacking some of Germany's best-defended targets.
