The author documents the different uniform insignia of the Waffen-SS by means of about 300 coloured illustrations, mostly in original size or larger: the various collar patches, epaulettes, sleeve stripes and eagles as well as national arm shields. They show that the Waffen-SS - which started out as a purely German SS auxiliary force - developed in the course of the war into a multinational unit in which not only members of almost all European nations served, but also Indians, Georgians, Azerbaijanis, Armenians and Tatars. The insignia and photos are supplemented by explanatory texts. The introduction gives a brief overview of the Waffen-SS insignia system.
