The term mortar refers to a short barrelled steep fire gun. Unlike howitzers, it is not usually intended for use in flat fire. The term derives from the double similarity with the working tool mortar, on the one hand by the shape of the early cannon barrels, on the other hand by the shape of the mortar butt. -Wikipedia-
