The term derives from the double similarity with the mortar tool, on the one hand through the shape of the early cannon barrels, on the other through the shape of the mortar butt. In addition, it was common in early examples of this type of weapon that black powder was introduced into the mortar and compacted there by plugging, similar to the case with the eponymous tool, the mortar. -Wikipedia-
