In order to achieve steeper ballistic trajectories, steep fire guns, the so-called mortars, were initially used. For reasons of expediency, the so-called howitzer was later used as a mixture of the flat-fire and the steep-fire gun. These were purely steep-fire guns, with which both possibilities could be covered.
