To the Pz.Sfl.Ia 5 cm Pak 38 on gp.Mun.Schlepper.After the victory in the west, on 5 July 1940 the In 6 has commissioned Wa Prüf to develop a light tank destroyer. This was to be intended for airborne troops and non-motorised infantry divisions. So WaPrüf commissioned Rheinmetall-Borsig to develop the 5 cm Pak 38 L/60 on the chassis of the Borgward ammunition tractor. To save weight, a bulkhead armour with two 4 mm thick armour plates each frontally and for the gun as well as two 3 cm armour plates laterally and at the rear was requested. This thickness was sufficient to be 7.92 mm SMK safe.
The chassis was a modified VK 3.02 ammunition tractor, powered by a 2.3 litre Borgward 50 hp engine which enabled the 4.5 ton vehicle to reach a speed of 30 kph. The crew consisted of 3 men (commander/gunner, driver and gunner). In the tank programme 41 of 30 May 1941, the demand for this vehicle is given as 3144 pieces. Production was planned to start in 1943 with an output of 100 units from 1 April 44 and 200 units from 1 April 45.
Two experimental units were produced by 1 July 42 and sent for troop testing. On 8 August 1942 the 19th Panzer Division reported on the vehicles however the report is lost.
