Discusses the innovative design of tender locomotives developed by Charles Benjamin Collet for the GWR, the role of the 5700 class, Britain's second most successful steam railway series, in service since 1929, considerations of the 1500, 1600, 5400, 6400, 7400 and 9400 classes, that of overground railway operation and their use on the London Underground, and finally the preservation of historic railways.
