Using approximately 20 full-page colour images, this book depicts soldiers, armies and battles in the age of gunpowder from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The colour plates were designed by well-known military painters such as Richard Hook, Angus McBride, Ed Dovey and Rob Chapman. Among those depicted are 16th-century London militiamen, Prince Rupert of the Palatinate at the Battle of Marston Moor (1644), Jacobite warriors at the Battle of Culloden (1746), hussars from Lauzun's Legion, British soldiers of the 57th Regiment of Foot at Albuera (1811), and a French cuirassier from 1812.
