The Type 99A1 is the latest tank to serve in the PLA. It is similar to its predecessor, the Type 99G, but has improved armour. The turret has increased overhead protection and newly designed frontal armour which has changed the turret shape. The applique ERA armour blocks protecting the hull are also thicker and are more extensive. There may also be upgrades to the gunnery system and GPS positioning system. The Type 99A1 is due to be superceded by the Type 99A2, which has many additional improvements. This tank is still on trials and not due to enter service until late 2009 at the earliest.
