The Sd.Kfz 221 was developed in 1934 for the newly forming German Army, as a cheap and easy to build light reconnaissance car. Powered by a Horch V-8 3.5 litre 90 bhp engine the car had a top speed of 85 km/h, and it was armed by a 7.92mm light machine gun. Early cars had only 8mm armour and weighed just over 4 tons combat loaded and had a crew of two. Prior to Germanys alliance with Japan, military vehicles were supplied to the Chinese Nationalist Army, the Kuomintang. These included the Sd.Kfz 221, along with the Sd.Kfz 222 and 223 radio cars. In Chinese service the cars were armed with the older MG13 machine guns and had local modifications. The German armoured cars formed part of the 3rd Tank Battalion of the Kuomintang, stationed in Nanking, and were largely destroyed when the Japanese attacked the city in December 1937. In 1939 some of the remaining cars were issued to the 200th Mechanized Division, which was destroyed shortly afterward. Survivors continued in service until replaced by American equipment from 1942.
