The tasks of the USSR Ministry of the Interior were carried out by the People's Commissariat of the Interior after the October Revolution in 1917. The abbreviation NKVD (= Narodny Kommissariat Vnutrennich del / People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs) became established as the designation, which was in use from 1934 to 1946. In 1946, the term People's Commissar was replaced by Minister. The Ministry of Internal Affairs now used the abbreviation MWD.
