Volume 1: A History of the Early Medieval Siege, c. 450-1200; Volume 2: A History of the Late Medieval Siege c. 1200-1500. Based on an intensive look at the historical sources, this two-volume work takes a close look at the development of medieval siege warfare from the early Middle Ages (from 450) to the end of this period (c. 1500). It is particularly concerned with the ever-changing interplay between the improvement of city and castle fortifications and the accompanying "upgrading" on the part of the besiegers in terms of technology (e.g. new siege engines) and tactics. However, the author not only takes a look at the written legacy of contemporaries, but also compares their statements about the siege warfare with the latest archaeological findings.
