Numerous well-known German-speaking authors kept a war diary during the Second World War. This anthology examines the different reactions of the authors to nationalist tensions and their various conceptions of the "fatherland". The war diary is of particular importance when it comes to describing contemporary historical upheavals.
Whether written at the front, in the war effort or on the "home front", it contains the strands of discourse that ran through wartime societies - and thus reveals the political positioning of its authors. This volume examines the forms of historicising by Ingeborg Bachmann, Robert Musil, Stefan Zweig, Ernst Stadler, Egon E. Kisch, Alfred H. Fried, Heinrich Böll, Erich Kästner and Ernst Jünger. Due to the controversy that the latter triggered with his war diaries, the significance of his war diaries is explored in two separate essays.
