The history of the "primordial catastrophe of the 20th century" tells of the unleashing of the First World War, of the role of Emperor Franz Joseph, of the behaviour of the nationalities up to the disintegration of the Habsburg Empire. The author does not only deal with the military events. Special attention is paid to the different mentalities, the phenomenon of mass desertions, self-mutilation, the failure of part of the leadership elite, the suicides of high officers, the reactions to mass deaths, the enormous number of wounded and maimed, and to hunger and hardship in everyday life.
