Leopold I was head of the early modern Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation for longer than any other emperor. His reign was a time of change, a time of radical upheaval. The emperor himself had risen to a position of power that surpassed that of all his predecessors and successors. Nevertheless, there is no up-to-date biography that meets academic standards. Until now, the emperor has been described as indecisive, unmilitary, scrupulous and bigoted. A closer look reveals a completely different picture: when it served his political and dynastic interests, Leopold was able to act quickly and decisively. In stark contrast to this was his skilfully chosen self-portrayal, in which he presented himself as a pious, law-abiding and caring monarch a self-portrayal that had a great effect on his contemporaries and shaped the later view of history. The book offers a new image of this emperor and his era, which was rich in dramatic developments and momentous political decisions.
