Bernese hilt weapons 1500 - 1850
Handle weapons are weapons with a blade and a handle. These include sabres and swords, but also lesser-known sidearms such as fascine knives or deer hunters. What is specifically "Bernese" about these weapons is the context in which this publication embeds them, namely the military history of the city republic in the period from 1500 to 1850.
The hilt weapons presented are not only part of Bern's military history, they also reflect the social and economic conditions of the time. Why were new weapons procured? Who were the initiators and clients, who were the manufacturers and what events and factors influenced the armament of the Bernese militia?
