-Prussian soldiers only- Frederick the Great, carrying the regimantal colour of the fusilier-regiment No.46 "von Bülow", leads the second charge against the Russians, when his first attack had failed.
In this bloodiest battle of the Seven Years' War, more than 12,000 Prussians and almost 19,000 Russians fell. General Fermor's Russian army, which had already occupied East Prussia, reached the Oder near the Prussian fortress of Küstrin at the beginning of August and on 25 August met some 36,000 Prussians at Zorndorf with 44,000 men. Cossack troops swarming around had set fire to the village and many fields. The King's opinion of his opponent was not high: "The Muscovites are a bunch of barbarians brought together, who can easily overpower disciplined troops", a statement he was to regret that very evening. The battle - although fought with extreme bitterness by both sides - actually ended without a decision, with both sides claiming victory. Both armies, after the battle had turned as if around a fixed point, found themselves in the evening almost in the starting positions of the enemy. As the Russians subsequently withdrew, the main danger was averted: a unification of the Russian and Austrian armies.
