To fire, it charged: the first link dropped to the knee, the second link stepped behind it, and the third link moved to the right into the gaps. The battalion salvo was the firing manoeuvre in which all the pelotons of the battalion fired simultaneously (about 600 rifles), often the last salvo before the assault. With the smoothbore rifles, aimed fire was not possible, so whoever loaded faster and fired more volleys had the advantage.
