With detached pole weapons, 14th/15th century Europe Long spears were about 6 m long. Combined with the thrust of a pile, they formed an effective weapon and kept enemy cavalry at a distance. The halberd or helmbard ("helmet axe") was a combination of spear and axe. The heavy axe on the long pole split helmets effortlessly.
