On 25 June 1807, peace negotiations began in Tilsit between Napoleon and Emperor Alexander I in a tent, on a pontoon floating in the middle of the Memel. The Memel formed the demarcation line between the French and Russian zones of influence. It was flanked by one French and one Russian boat each with senior officers.
