France 1812. The bulk of the Napoleonic army entered almost deserted Moscow on 14 September 1812. Two-thirds of the inhabitants followed the departing Russian troops. Emperor Napoleon, who had hoped for a delegation of the inhabitants to greet him and for a peace offer from the Tsar, was deeply disappointed. During the first night, fires broke out in various parts of the city through the carelessness of looting soldiers, but probably also through Russian arson. Moscow, built mainly of wooden houses, was a sea of flames until 18 September 1812. Our series shows the Emperor with his Chief of Staff Marshal Berthier and Marshal Ney as well as other officers at the Kremlin wall. Stunned, the conqueror watches the winter quarters and supplies of his army sink into rubble. Includes colour background of burning Moscow measuring 18.4 x 9.8 cm.
