Mounted Chasseurs (Imperial Guard), Napoleon: Retreat from Moscow 1812

Napoleon had created the Imperial Guard on 18 May 1804 as an exclusive corps from all branches of arms with double the number of men and special privileges. The hunters on horseback were among the so-called possessed of the privilege of providing a squadron for service in the respective imperial residence. They were barracked in the Paris Military School, uniformed in hussar style, and in the field formed to some extent Napoleon's bodyguards.
Our series shows hunters on horseback, but also hunters trudging along on foot, as many horses died or were slaughtered during the retreat.

Crossing the Berezina,
The Battle of the Berezina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée from the troops of Tsar Alexander I across the Berezina (now Belarusian Bjaresina) from 26 to 28 November 1812.
This battle was the last in the Russian campaign of 1812 before the retreat of the French army across the Niemen on 14 December 1812.
