About 1810, 7.5 cm. Juliette or Julie Récamier, née Jeanne Françoise Julie Adélaïde Bernard, known as Madame Récamier (December 4, 1777 in Lyon; May 11, 1849 in Paris), was a French salonnière. In her time, Madame Récamier was considered exceptionally beautiful. She also possessed a witty and amiable personality and, from the early days of the Consulate, maintained a salon in Paris that was an important meeting place for high society, as well as for critics and political opponents of Napoleon. Visitors included Madame de Staël, who was a close friend of Madame Récamier, Benjamin Constant, François-René de Chateaubriand, and the generals Jean-Victor Moreau and Jean Baptiste Bernadotte. The Récamière was named after the French salonnière Julie Récamier (17771849) after she was painted reclining on it by Jacques-Louis David.
