Our series shows sappers (siege engineers or troop craftsmen) of the line troops doing various pioneering tasks (driving in stakes, sawing, etc.), e.g. for the erection of a bridge or the construction of rafts. Sappers were assigned to the units as craftsmen and performed pioneering tasks.

Crossing the Beresina,
The Battle of the Beresina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée from the troops of Tsar Alexander I. This battle was the last in the Russian campaign of 1812 before the retreat of the French army across the Niemen on 14 December 1812.
