Europe, early 16th century Flags were the most important means of leadership and orientation in the battle of pile tactics. The term "ensign" is derived from this. The ensigns would gather around the flag bearer on the command "Stream in heaps!". The ensigns then marched up to form force clusters or meetings. In these heaps, which were about 50 members deep, the individual could not see what was happening in front and what the reason for each movement was.
