The USA did not enter the First World War until 1917. The first US soldiers to enter Europe in 1917 wore leggings cut in the style of breeches, which had been introduced in 1912. The trousers had externally attached doubles at the knees and had two pockets at the back and two pockets at the front. In addition, there was a watch pocket on the right front. These trousers were accompanied by a cloth belt. Like the leggings, the tunic had also entered service in 1912. It had a high-necked stiff stand-up collar with the metal letters "U.S." on the right and the insignia of the branch of arms - crossed rifles in the infantry - with the regimental number and company letter on the left. The jacket was fastened with five large metal buttons at the front. Smaller buttons were attached for the two lap and breast pockets respectively. The American bald eagle was embossed on all the buttons.
