The tactic of the light-armed men was to approach the enemy phalanx in small groups and at a run, to within throwing distance, and to throw their javelins in order to retreat again before the hoplites could use their lances against them. The throwing spears of the peltasts, were fitted with a loop at the end of the shaft, called the ankyle. To throw, the peltast put his index and middle fingers into the loop and held the shaft with his other fingers. The loop enabled him to throw the spear with great precision and force. -Wikipedia-
