Smaller compilation. A hoplite was a member of the main force of the Greek armies of the Archaic and Classical periods. The hoplites fought in a closed formation, the phalanx. If one side was put to flight, the battle was decided because many fighters threw away their heavy shield as they fled. It was not possible to fight again without the shield. This made the battles more dogged, but they were probably also shorter and usually clearly decided. -Wikipedia-
