The great Opet festival illustrates in a special way the splendour of ancient Thebes (now Luxor). This festival in honour of the god Amon was celebrated annually on New Year's Day. During this procession, the god was brought on a barque in a ceremonial procession from his temple in Karnak to his "Southern Harem" in Luxor. Priests, musicians and dancers accompany the barge.
