1 June 1879 After losing the war of 1870/71, the French Imperial Family went into exile in England. The Prince went to the Woolwich War School and then became an officer in the mounted artillery of the British Army. As an officer, he volunteered to take part in the Zulu War and fell in it on a reconnaissance ride when his small force of 7 men and a lieutenant were üsurprised by 40 Zulu warriors.
