General Gordon died on January 26, 1885, when Mahdist forces captured Khartoum after a long siege. He refused to evacuate, facing his fate with stoic resolution in the governor's palace. His death shocked Britain and turned him into a symbol of imperial sacrifice.
After the 1893 painting "General Gordon's Last Stand" by George W. Joy.
