When Moreau was talking to the Tsar on the Räcknitzhöhe south of the city during the Battle of Dresden on 27 August 1813, a cannonball shattered both his legs. After being treated on the farm of the farmer Palitzsch in Kleinpestitz, the inevitable amputation took place a few kilometres away in the manor house of Nöthnitz Castle, performed by the Tsar's personal physician, the Scotsman James Wylie; according to tradition, Moreau smoked cigars during the operation. He was then taken to Bohemia via Dippoldiswalde and the Ore Mountains, where he died in Laun on 2 September 1813. (Wikipedia)
