RAF Squadron 35, originally formed during the First World War as part of the Royal Flying Corps, was re-established in November 1940 to introduce the Handley Page Halifax heavy bomber into service. The squadron initially belonged to the 4th Group of Bomber Command and took part in missions against the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the battleship Tirpitz. After participating in the first 1,000-bomber raids in 1942, the 35th Squadron was transferred to the Pathfinder Force in 1942. It remained there until the end of the war in Europe.
